When Paul tells us there shouldn't be a hint of "obscenity, foolish talk, or coarse joking" (Ephesians 5:3-4) among us, it is easy for the average adult to roll their eyes. Does "following God’s example" mean becoming the fun police? Does a godly life require giving up your sense of humour?
Actually, no. Paul isn’t being a prude; he is attacking our apathy.
In a modern culture obsessed with constant entertainment, our frivolous banter often serves as a comfortable shield. It distracts us, allowing us to remain indifferent to the high calling of living as God intends.
To "walk in the way of love" isn't about rigidly policing your vocabulary - it's about waking up to who God has made us to be and being obedient to Him. Christ "gave himself up for us," modelling a life of self-giving sacrifice rather than self-serving indulgence. When we settle for "empty words" and cheap laughs, we numb ourselves to the real pain of our neighbours and the "fruitless deeds of darkness" that need exposing.
Living as "dearly loved children" means producing the "fruit of the light" - tangible goodness, righteousness, and truth. It isn't about losing your joy; it is about trading cheap distractions for a life full of "thanksgiving" that actually "pleases the Lord."
Please also keep praying for our church finances - and considering or reconsidering how you could help partner with us in Gospel ministry and to bring our church back to financial sustainability. The financial update document (in all languages) is available.
