In our laid-back Australian culture, it’s easy to dismiss the “spiritual warfare” of Ephesians 6 as a relic of a superstitious past. We prefer logical, scientific explanations. But the Apostle Paul’s warning that our struggle is “not against flesh and blood” remains fiercely relevant.
Evil isn't just a metaphor; it’s a reality. However, this dark spiritual influence doesn't only look like a horror movie. It frequently infiltrates the very ideologies, social structures, and cultural practices that shape our modern Western world, pulling us away from God’s design for human flourishing.
So, how do we fight? Paul isn't calling us to a fearful witch-hunt. Instead, he urges us to suit up in God’s own armor. This means deeply adopting our new identity in Christ. When we buckle on truth, wear the breastplate of righteousness, and take up the shield of faith, we are putting on God’s core virtues to resist both systemic corruption and personal temptation.
But this spiritual warfare is not just about defense! Notice that Paul asks for prayer to 'fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel'. Grounded in constant, Spirit-led prayer, we aren't fighting for victory but moving forward because of the victory Jesus has already won.
