This Sunday, we read the Ten Commandments (Deuteronomy 5). It is very easy to default to legalism - reducing faith to mere rule-keeping. But God desires much more than mechanical compliance; He wants trusting obedience rooted in a deep, intimate relationship. Don't forget that before issuing a single command, God reminded Israel of His rescuing grace: "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt" (Deut 5:6). This is because true obedience flows from this loving rescue, calling us to serve Him "with all your heart and with all your soul" (Deut 10:12). It this grace and faithful obedience with formed the basis of the beautiful life that God envisaged for His people in the Promised Land!
However, applying these ancient laws today presents a significant challenge for Christians. We no longer live under the Mosaic covenant, and reading these commandments quickly exposes a painful reality: our "stiff-necked" inability to consistently obey (Deut 9:6). The law paints a breathtaking portrait of human flourishing, yet it simultaneously reveals our profound moral inadequacy. If we treat the Ten Commandments merely as a checklist to earn God's favour, we fall into a trap. Just like the Israelites, we cannot meet the law's perfect standard (Gal 3:10; Deut 27:26).
Thankfully, Jesus did not come to abolish Moses' beautiful vision of life, but to fulfill it perfectly (Matt 5:17). On the cross, Christ redeemed us by absorbing the curse of the law Himself (Gal 3:13; Deut 21:22-23). Furthermore, in Jesus, the New Covenant solves the deepest problem of the human heart. Through the regenerating power of the Holy Spirit, God fulfills His ancient promise to "circumcise your hearts" (Deut 30:6). It is only by being united to Christ and empowered by His Spirit that loving the Lord with all our heart, soul, and mind finally becomes a reality.
